Male elephant seals can weigh up to 2,700kg - that's heavier than most cars - and grow up to 6 metres long, making them the largest carnivores in the world after the bear family.
They can dive to depths of over 1,500 metres and hold their breath for up to two hours - one of the deepest and longest dives of any mammal.
The males' inflatable proboscis (nose) can be up to 30cm long and is used to produce extraordinarily loud roaring calls during the breeding season - audible from kilometres away.
Elephant seals spend up to 10 months of each year at sea and sleep while diving - they enter a state called sleep-swimming, spiralling slowly downwards while unconscious.
Pups are born weighing around 40kg and are weaned after just 28 days - in that time they quadruple their weight, then are abandoned by their mothers and must fend entirely for themselves.
