Printable Emu Mask

printable emu mask for kids

Australia's tallest bird and one of the most entertaining - our printable emu mask is a brilliant choice! The emu can't fly, can't walk backwards, and once fought - and lost - a war against Australian farmers in the 1930s. It's an extraordinary animal with a personality to match. Perfect for Australian animals school plays, flightless birds projects, World Book Day, birthday parties, and very fast imaginative sprinting.

The emu is a fantastic subject for Australian animals topics and always surprises kids with its sheer size and quirky biology - it makes a natural pairing with the kangaroo and koala in any Down Under display. Every mask comes with a full colour version AND a black and white line art version for colouring in.

5 Interesting Facts About Emus!

  • In 1932, the Australian government sent soldiers armed with machine guns to cull emus that were damaging wheat crops - the emus won. The birds dispersed and regrouped so effectively that the operation was abandoned. It's known as the Great Emu War.
  • Emus can't walk backwards - it's physically impossible for them due to the structure of their legs and feet, which is why they were chosen for the Australian coat of arms (an animal that can only move forward).
  • Male emus do all the incubating and childcare - the female lays the eggs and then leaves, while the father sits on the nest for 8 weeks without eating, drinking or defecating.
  • Emus can run at up to 50km/h and cover up to 25km a day - their powerful three-toed feet make them excellent distance runners despite being flightless.
  • They swallow large pebbles and stones deliberately to help grind up food in their gizzard - an emu's stomach can contain over 700 grams of stones at any one time.
