Printable Manatee Mask

printable manatee mask for kids

Gentle, rotund and utterly endearing - our printable manatee mask celebrates one of the ocean's most peaceful and beloved creatures! The manatee, sometimes called the sea cow, drifts through warm coastal waters in blissful slow motion, grazing on sea grass and delighting everyone who encounters it. Perfect for ocean-themed school plays, marine mammals classroom projects, World Book Day, birthday parties, and the most relaxed imaginative play imaginable.

The manatee is a wonderful subject for conservation topics - it's endangered largely due to boat strikes, which has led to speed restrictions across Florida's waterways and some genuinely heartwarming conservation success stories. Every mask comes with a full colour version AND a black and white line art version for colouring in.

5 Interesting Facts About Manatees!

  • Manatees are most closely related to elephants - despite looking nothing like them and living entirely in water, genetic analysis shows the two share a common ancestor from around 60 million years ago.
  • They're thought to be the origin of mermaid legends - sailors who had been at sea for months reportedly mistook surfacing manatees for mermaids, though this says rather more about the sailors than the manatees.
  • Manatees replace their teeth continuously from the back - new teeth grow at the back of the jaw and slowly move forward throughout the animal's life, replacing worn teeth that fall out at the front.
  • They must surface to breathe every 3–5 minutes but can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes when resting - they sometimes sleep just below the surface, rising periodically to breathe without fully waking.
  • Manatees have no natural predators - humans are essentially their only threat, primarily through boat propeller strikes and fishing net entanglement. Many wild manatees carry distinctive scar patterns from boat encounters.
