5 Interesting Facts About Reindeer!

  • Female reindeer are the only female deer species that grow antlers - in most deer species only males have them, but reindeer females grow antlers too, and keep theirs through winter while males shed theirs in November.
  • This means Father Christmas's reindeer are almost certainly all female - since they're depicted flying on Christmas Eve with full antlers, and male reindeer would have shed theirs by then.
  • Reindeer hooves change with the seasons - in summer they're spongy for grip on soft tundra, in winter they harden and sharpen for traction on ice and snow. Nature's built-in seasonal tyre change.
  • Their eyes change colour between summer and winter - golden in summer, then shifting to blue in winter. This increases sensitivity to UV light in the low Arctic winter sun, allowing them to see polar bear fur (which is UV-absorbing) against the UV-reflecting snow.
  • Reindeer are the only domesticated deer - they have been herded by the Sami people of Scandinavia and Siberia for over 7,000 years, providing milk, meat, clothing and transport.
