The rhinoceros is one of the most impressive animals on Earth, with that extraordinary horn and prehistoric bulk making it look like something that wandered in from the Jurassic. Perfect for African animals school plays, safari classroom projects, conservation topics, World Book Day, birthday parties, and powerfully determined imaginative play.

The rhino is one of the most urgent conservation stories of our time - with some species down to just a few dozen individuals, this mask is a brilliant hook for discussions about poaching, habitat loss and what we can do to protect these extraordinary animals. 5 Interesting Facts About Rhinos!

  • A rhino's horn is made entirely of keratin - the same material as human fingernails and hair. It has no bone or ivory in it whatsoever, making the belief in its medicinal properties completely unfounded.
  • Rhinos have terrible eyesight - they can only see clearly up to about 30 metres, which is one reason they sometimes charge at unexpected objects. Their senses of smell and hearing, however, are extraordinary.
  • They communicate through dung - rhinos leave scent-marked dung piles called middens that convey information about identity, reproductive status and territory to other rhinos.
  • The northern white rhino is functionally extinct - only two females remain alive, both living in a protected sanctuary in Kenya. Scientists are racing to use preserved genetic material to save the subspecies.
  • Rhinos are surprisingly agile - despite weighing up to 2,300kg, the black rhino can sprint at up to 55km/h and turn with remarkable speed. Never assume a rhino is slow.
