5 Interesting Facts About Swans!

  • Swans mate for life and are genuinely devoted partners - if one dies, the surviving swan often goes through a period of mourning, sometimes losing weight and becoming withdrawn before eventually finding a new mate.
  • The Crown technically owns all unmarked mute swans in open water in England and Wales - an ancient royal prerogative dating from the 12th century, upheld by the annual Swan Upping census on the Thames each July.
  • A swan's neck contains twice as many vertebrae as a human - 25 cervical vertebrae compared to our 7, giving it that extraordinary S-shaped flexibility and reach.
  • Cygnets (baby swans) are born grey and transform gradually to white - the process takes about a year, which is the biological basis of the Ugly Duckling story. The grey youngsters are sometimes aggressively driven off by their own parents.
  • Swans can fly at speeds of up to 95km/h - despite their serene appearance on water, they are powerful and fast fliers, and their wingbeats produce a distinctive whistling sound audible from a considerable distance.
