Printable Tarantula Mask

printable tarantula mask for kids

Eight hairy legs, eight eyes and an impressive reputation that far exceeds the actual danger - our printable tarantula mask is a Halloween and minibeasts classic! The tarantula is the world's largest spider and one of the most dramatic-looking invertebrates on the planet, and this mask does full justice to all that large, hairy, magnificently legged splendour. Perfect for minibeasts school plays, Halloween, World Book Day, birthday parties, and impressively large imaginative play.

The tarantula is one of those animals children find simultaneously fascinating and terrifying - which makes it brilliant for discussions about fear, arachnophobia and how most of our spider fears are disproportionate to the actual risk. Every mask comes with a full colour version AND a black and white line art version for colouring in.

5 Interesting Facts About Tarantulas!

  • Despite their fearsome reputation, most tarantula bites are no worse than a bee sting - their venom is relatively mild and primarily evolved to subdue small invertebrate prey rather than defend against large mammals.
  • The Goliath bird-eating tarantula of South America is the world's largest spider by mass - with a leg span of up to 30cm and weighing up to 175g, it can eat birds, mice, frogs and small snakes.
  • Tarantulas can live extraordinarily long lives - females of some species can reach 30 or even 40 years old, making them one of the longest-lived invertebrates. Males live much shorter lives, typically dying soon after mating.
  • They moult their entire exoskeleton to grow - tarantulas flip onto their backs, split open their old skin and slowly extract themselves. During and after moulting they are completely vulnerable and must not be disturbed.
  • Tarantulas have a backup pair of eyes on top of their head - most have eight eyes total, though their vision is generally poor. They rely primarily on touch and vibration-sensing hairs to detect prey and danger.
