Printable Umbrella Bird Mask

printable umbrella bird mask for kids

One of the most dramatic haircuts in the entire bird world - our printable umbrella bird mask celebrates the Amazonian umbrellabird and its extraordinary forward-sweeping crest that hangs over its bill like a dramatic fringe! Add to that a dangling wattle on the chest and you have one of the most theatrical birds in the rainforest. Perfect for tropical birds school plays, rainforest classroom projects, World Book Day, birthday parties, and magnificently coiffed imaginative play.

The umbrellabird is one of those animals children simply cannot believe is real - that crest looks like it belongs on a cartoon character, yet here it is in the Amazon, entirely genuine and entirely magnificent. A mask guaranteed to stop the room. Every mask comes with a full colour version AND a black and white line art version for colouring in.

5 Interesting Facts About Umbrella Birds!

  • The Amazonian umbrellabird's crest is made of forward-curving feathers supported by an elongated skull - when raised fully it fans out over the bill like an umbrella, which is exactly how it got its name.
  • Males also have a long, feathered wattle hanging from the throat - this can be up to 35cm long and is inflated during display, producing a deep booming call that resonates through the forest.
  • There are three species of umbrellabird, all found in Central and South America - the Amazonian, the bare-necked and the long-wattled umbrellabird, each with slightly different crest and wattle arrangements.
  • They are frugivores - fruit makes up the majority of their diet, and like toucans they are important seed dispersers in the rainforest ecosystem.
  • Female umbrellabirds have much smaller crests and wattles than males - the elaborate display features are primarily for attracting mates and intimidating rivals rather than everyday function.
