5 Interesting Facts About Vipers!

  • The adder is Britain's only venomous snake - found across England, Wales and Scotland in heathland, moorland and woodland edges. Despite its fearsome reputation, adder bites are rarely fatal and it will always retreat if given the chance.
  • Vipers have the most sophisticated venom delivery system of any snake - their long, hinged fangs fold back against the roof of the mouth when not in use and swing forward to inject venom with pinpoint accuracy during a strike.
  • Many vipers have heat-sensing pit organs - located between the eye and nostril, these infrared detectors allow pit vipers to track warm-blooded prey in complete darkness by detecting body heat.
  • The Gaboon viper has the longest fangs of any snake - measuring up to 5cm, they can penetrate deep enough to inject venom directly into muscle tissue rather than just under the skin.
  • Viper venom is primarily haemotoxic - it attacks blood cells and blood vessels rather than the nervous system, causing tissue damage that makes it medically complex to treat but generally slower-acting than neurotoxic venoms.
