Printable Puffin Mask

printable puffin mask for kids

The clown of the seabird world - and absolutely nobody is complaining! Our printable puffin mask is one of the most charming designs in the entire collection, with that vivid rainbow beak, smart black and white plumage and permanently surprised expression making it an instant favourite. Perfect for British wildlife school plays, coastal habitat classroom projects, World Book Day, birthday parties, and wonderfully characterful imaginative play.

The puffin is one of Britain's most beloved seabirds and a genuine icon of the northern coasts - its combination of clumsy cuteness and remarkable underwater agility makes it a perennially fascinating subject for nature topics. Every mask comes with a full colour version AND a black and white line art version for colouring in.

5 Interesting Facts About Puffins!

  • Puffins can hold up to 62 small fish in their beak at once - their beak has backward-facing serrations on the upper jaw that hold fish in place while they dive for more, allowing multiple catches per trip.
  • They spend most of their life at sea - puffins only come to land to breed, spending the rest of the year on the open ocean, sleeping on the water and diving for fish in all weathers.
  • Puffins are remarkably good underwater - using their wings to 'fly' through the water, they can dive to depths of 60 metres and swim at up to 10km/h, catching fish with astonishing precision.
  • That vivid beak is a seasonal accessory - outside the breeding season, puffins shed the colourful outer plates of their beak, leaving a much smaller, duller bill. The colourful beak regrows each spring.
  • Puffins mate for life and return to the same burrow every year - couples will spend the winter apart at sea then reunite at their nest site in spring, greeting each other by rubbing beaks together.
