Printable Squirrel Mask

printable squirrel mask for kids

Bushy-tailed, bright-eyed and perpetually in a hurry - our printable squirrel mask is a woodland classic that kids absolutely love! The squirrel is one of the most familiar and entertaining garden and woodland animals in Britain, always busy, always watchful and always good value. Perfect for woodland school plays, British wildlife classroom projects, World Book Day, birthday parties, and energetically acrobatic imaginative play.

The squirrel is a brilliant subject for woodland habitats, food storage, animal behaviour and seasons topics - its habit of burying nuts for winter and then forgetting where half of them are makes it an inadvertent forest gardener, planting thousands of trees every year. Every mask comes with a full colour version AND a black and white line art version for colouring in.

5 Interesting Facts About Squirrels!

  • Squirrels plant thousands of trees every year by accident - they bury acorns and nuts as winter food stores but forget the locations of up to 74% of them. Many of these forgotten caches germinate and grow into trees.
  • Grey squirrels practise deceptive caching - if they think they're being watched, they will pretend to bury a nut (making all the digging motions while palming it), then secretly bury it somewhere else when the observer has gone.
  • A squirrel's teeth never stop growing - like all rodents, their incisors grow continuously and must be worn down by constant gnawing. If misaligned, the teeth would eventually curl around and prevent the squirrel from eating.
  • They can locate a nut buried under 30cm of snow - using their extraordinary sense of smell to detect food caches through a foot of packed ice and snow, even months after burying it.
  • Red squirrels are endangered in Britain - introduced grey squirrels outcompete them for food and carry a squirrelpox virus to which greys are immune but reds are not, pushing red squirrels to remote refuges in Scotland and northern England.
