Groundhogs are true hibernators - their heart rate drops from 80 beats per minute to just 5, their body temperature falls to just above freezing, and they lose up to half their body weight during winter.

A groundhog's burrow is an impressive piece of engineering - typically 1.5 metres deep and up to 15 metres long, with multiple entrances, a sleeping chamber and a separate toilet area.
Groundhogs are also called woodchucks - which inspired the famous tongue twister. Despite the name, they don't actually chuck wood; the word comes from a Native American language and has nothing to do with wood.
