5 Interesting Facts About Hares!

  • March hares really do go mad in spring - the famous 'boxing' behaviour is actually females fighting off over-eager males during mating season, not males competing with each other as was long assumed.
  • Hares can reach speeds of up to 70km/h, making them one of the fastest land animals in Britain - significantly faster than a greyhound over short distances.
  • Unlike rabbits, hares never burrow - they live entirely above ground, sheltering in shallow depressions called forms and relying entirely on speed and camouflage to escape predators.
  • Baby hares (leverets) are born fully furred with open eyes, ready to fend for themselves within hours - completely unlike baby rabbits, which are born blind, naked and helpless.
  • Hares practise a behaviour called refection - they produce soft droppings directly from the caecum and eat them immediately to extract extra nutrients, effectively digesting their food twice.
