5 Interesting Facts About Stegosauruses!

  • The stegosaurus had a brain the size of a walnut - roughly 80 grams in an animal weighing up to 7 tonnes, giving it one of the lowest brain-to-body ratios of any dinosaur. For comparison, a human brain is about 1,300 grams.
  • Those distinctive back plates may have been for temperature regulation - blood vessels in the plates could have absorbed heat from the sun or radiated excess heat, working like a biological radiator.
  • The thagomizer was genuinely dangerous - the four spikes on the stegosaurus's tail (officially named the thagomizer by palaeontologists, after a Far Side cartoon) have been found embedded in allosaur bones, proving they were used in combat.
  • Stegosaurus lived earlier in the Jurassic period than T. rex - stegosaurus and T. rex were separated by more time than T. rex and us. T. rex is chronologically closer to humans than to stegosaurus.
  • Their plates were likely covered in skin with blood vessels - they would have been colourful and may have flushed with blood when the animal was threatened or excited, functioning as a visual display as well as thermal regulation.
