5 Interesting Facts About T-Rex!

  • T-Rex probably had feathers - not the whole body, but fossil evidence and evolutionary analysis suggests it had at least some feathering, particularly when young. The scaly, naked reptile of Jurassic Park is almost certainly wrong.
  • Its tiny arms were actually extremely powerful - each arm could curl around 180kg, and T-Rex likely used them to grip prey and push itself up from the ground. They were short but far from useless.
  • T-Rex could smell extraordinarily well - its olfactory bulbs (the brain regions responsible for smell) were among the largest of any dinosaur, suggesting it may have tracked prey by scent over long distances.
  • It grew at an extraordinary rate during adolescence - juvenile T-Rex grew about 2kg per day during peak growth, going from hatchling to full adult size in around 20 years, a growth rate unmatched by any living reptile.
  • T-Rex is more closely related to a chicken than to most other dinosaurs - birds are living dinosaurs, and the closest living relatives of T-Rex are modern birds, particularly ratites like emus and ostriches.
