Triceratops had one of the largest skulls of any land animal ever - the frill and three horns together could measure up to 2.5 metres, accounting for about a third of the animal's total body length.
Scientists still debate the purpose of the frill - it may have been used for temperature regulation (flushed with blood to cool or warm), species recognition, display for attracting mates, or intimidating rivals and predators.
Triceratops and T. rex lived at the same time - they shared the same habitat in what is now North America 66–68 million years ago, and evidence of T. rex bite marks on triceratops bones confirms they genuinely encountered each other.
Their horns were covered in keratin like modern rhino horns - the bony core that fossilises was just the inner support structure, and the outer keratin sheath would have made the horns significantly longer than the fossils suggest.
